Barrington Tops

~2 hr drive from Denman Motor Inn 3 min read Upper Hunter, NSW

Barrington Tops rises to more than 1,500 metres, high enough for snow gums, sub-alpine swamps and pockets of Gondwana rainforest that put it on the World Heritage list. After the dry Hunter floor, the temperature drop and the green are startling.

The plateau

Up top you'll find short rainforest walks, waterfalls, picnic areas and lookouts that fall away over the whole Hunter. It can be twenty degrees cooler than Denman, so take a jacket even in summer.

How long it takes

It's a genuine full day: roughly two hours each way plus walking time. Leave early, pack lunch, and don't plan anything for the evening beyond dinner at a Denman pub.

Road conditions

The Barrington Tops Forest Road is unsealed and rough in sections; the sealed approaches through Gloucester take longer but suit any car. Snow and fog can close roads in winter.

Local tips
  • Fill the tank in Scone or Gloucester — there's no fuel on the plateau.
  • Layers, always. The weather up there changes fast.
  • Check park alerts for road closures before committing to the day.
