Fishing & Paddling the Rivers

From the doorstep from Denman Motor Inn 3 min read Upper Hunter, NSW

Denman sits at the junction of the Goulburn and the Hunter, which makes it a quietly excellent base for anyone who fishes or paddles. There's water within minutes of the motor inn and a big impoundment less than an hour away.

What's in the water

Australian bass are the prize in the rivers, along with golden perch, carp and eel-tailed catfish. Early morning and the last hour of light are the times that matter, especially through the warmer months.

Paddling

The slower river reaches suit kayaks and canoes — flat, sheltered water with river red gums, wallabies on the banks and a lot of birdlife. Lake Glenbawn opens up longer paddles if you want a full day on the water.

Rules and gear

You'll need a current NSW recreational fishing licence, available online. Check bag limits and closed seasons for bass, and take everything out that you bring in.

Local tips
  • We have plenty of parking for boats and trailers at the motor inn.
  • Reception can point you to the access points local anglers actually use.
  • Pack sun protection — there's very little shade on the water.
