Pokolbin & the Lower Hunter
Pokolbin is the Hunter most people picture: a dense cluster of cellar doors, hatted restaurants, gardens, golf courses and providores, all within a few kilometres of each other. It's about an hour from Denman — close enough for a full day out, far enough that you come home to a quiet night and a much friendlier room rate.
What's down there
Dozens of cellar doors ranging from historic family estates to slick modern tasting rooms, plus cheese makers, chocolatiers, a brewery or two, gardens and galleries. Several restaurants here are among the best in regional New South Wales, and most need booking well ahead on weekends.
Doing it as a day trip
Leave Denman by 9.30am and you'll be tasting by 10.30. Two cellar doors, lunch, then one or two more in the afternoon is a full and civilised day. Head home in the late afternoon and you'll beat the worst of the weekend traffic on the way out.
Why base yourself in Denman
Accommodation in Pokolbin gets expensive and books out for weddings and long weekends. Staying up here means quiet nights, easy parking at your door and a scenic drive through vineyard and horse-stud country in both directions.
- Book restaurants weeks ahead for Saturdays — the good ones fill fast.
- A driver or tour is the sensible option if everyone wants to taste.
- Buy at the door: many small-batch wines never reach retail shelves.
South-east via Denman Road and Broke, then into the Pokolbin vineyard district.
