Upper Hunter Cellar Doors
Denman sits at the top of Australia's oldest wine region, and the Upper Hunter is its quiet end. There are no tour-bus queues here. Cellar doors are small, often family-run, and the person pouring your glass usually picked the fruit. From the motor inn you can be tasting within ten minutes.
What the Upper Hunter does best
Semillon is the region's signature — bone dry and citrusy young, extraordinary with a decade in the bottle. Shiraz here is medium-bodied and earthy rather than jammy, and the chardonnay has a long history in these hills. Established estates around Denman and Wybong sit alongside newer boutique makers.
How to plan the day
Three cellar doors is a comfortable day; four is pushing it. Start mid-morning while your palate is fresh, break for a long lunch, and finish at whichever door does the style you liked most so you can buy properly. Many small producers are appointment-only midweek.
Getting around safely
Local drivers and small-group tours will collect you from the motor inn, which means nobody has to stay on the water. Give reception a day or two's notice and we'll point you to the operators our guests rate.
- Ring ahead on weekdays — the smallest doors open by appointment.
- Ask about back vintages of semillon; aged bottles rarely leave the cellar door.
- Harvest runs roughly January to March, when the valley is at its liveliest.
West and north of Denman along Wybong Road and the Golden Highway.
