15 min to Sandy Hollow from Denman Motor Inn 3 min read Upper Hunter, NSW

Fifteen minutes west of Denman, Sandy Hollow marks the start of the Bylong Valley Way — a sealed road that runs south-west between the sandstone walls of Wollemi and Goulburn River national parks. Riders and photographers make pilgrimages for it.

The drive

Sweeping bends, escarpment views, grazing country and hardly any traffic. The valley floor is a striking green against the pale cliffs, and there are pull-offs where you can stop and take it in properly.

How far to go

You can turn around at Bylong for a comfortable half-day, or keep going to Rylstone and Mudgee to make it a full day with lunch and a cellar door at the far end.

Sandy Hollow itself

A small village with fuel, a pub and river access, and the gateway to the Goulburn River. Worth a stop on the way out or back.

Local tips
  • Fuel up at Sandy Hollow — there's not much between there and Rylstone.
  • Watch for kangaroos and wandering stock at dawn and dusk.
  • Morning light suits the eastern cliffs; afternoon suits the western ones.
